Review: Homeschool Copywork

Copywork is something I’ve wanted to add to our homeschooling for quite some time.  I’ve always fussed with the idea of how to do it well and in the end I just never jumped in.  We’ve used handwriting books in the past but copywork is different from handwriting practice. Well, it does include handwriting practice but it is also something that help children improve their grammar, punctuation, and is it amazing with helping with memorization.  I was thrilled when we were chosen to review the Lifetime Membership from Homeschool Copywork as it seemed to be a fanastic resource for quality copywork material… and I was right!

What Is Homeschool Copywork?

Homeschool Copywork is an online resource that was created by a fellow homeschooling mom who has seen the benefits of practicing copywork in her own children.  It is overflowing with ready to print and go copywork books for children of all levels including Early Elementary, Upper Elementary, Middle School, and High School.

You will find copywork for standard manuscript printing and cursive.  What I love is that many of the copywork books actually come in both styles so you can have children of a variety of levels working on the same book.  For example, we used a copywork book from 1st Corinthians.  I could have chosen to print off a book in either cursive or manuscript, or one of each if I have different children at different levels. The scriptures are traced and then printed or drawn in cursive on the lines below.

How Do We Use It?

I was blown away by just how much is offered on this website.  The variety of copywork books to choose from is fantastic! We started with the Greatest of These 1 Corinthians 13 Cursive copywork by Amy Blevins in manuscript for my older boys.  My fiver year old daughter began with My Animal Alphabet Copywork also by Amy Blevins.

My boys appreciate the straightforwardness of completing copywork.  They liked how they could clearly see just what was expected of them for that day and they appreciated that they paper they needed to do the work on was readily available.  They are no-nonsense, let’s get this done, kind of children.  My daughter loved having a similar assignment to her brother’s but she particularly delighted in coloring the pictures!

My boys also worked on Dragons of the Bible Copywork , Notebooking, and Coloring Pages by Amy Blevins. They absolute loved this one.  It takes 22 verses from the Bible that have the word “dragon” translated in it.  She points out in the description of this copywork book that this proves there were dinosaurs during Biblical times.  We are young earth creationists so this book fit perfectly with our world view.  The full sized dragon coloring pages were a huge hit. This isn’t a wimpy book as there are 154 pages all together. This one book contains both manuscript and cursive together.

There is so much available on this webpage that will not only bring copywork or notebooking into your homeschooling for rich topics of study as well.  Some of the titles that stand out to me include:

  • Character Building Copywork
  • The Poems of Lewis Carroll
  • Vincent Van Gogh Artist Study and Copywork Volumes 1 through 5
  • Franz Liszt Quotes for Copywork
  • Christmas Copywork in KJV or ESV
  • Mozart Copywork
  • Fearfully and Wonderfully Made Copywork (this book is 253 pages!  – we will look at this one next)
  • Courage Always Rises – Quotes from Jane Austen for Copywork
  • Star Spangled Banner Copywork
  • Christmas Carols as Copywork – I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day and Joy To the World
  • O Love That Will Not Let Me Go – Hymn Study and Copywork

And the list goes on and on and on and on.  What I’ve shared here isn’t even a drop in the bucket compared to what is offered.

Overall I am THRILLED with Homeschool Copywork!  This is a resource I will likely use for the rest of our homeschooling career.  It is just packed full of copywork and notebooking goodies that add such a richness to our studies.
